Abilene Christian University (ACU) has launched a new Certificate in Practical Ministry focused on equipping church ministers with foundational and

theologically-based courses to lead their congregations better. In response to the rising challenges of ministers and congregations across the country, this new graduate-level certificate is designed to meet the specific needs of ministers who require the theological, historical and practical training necessary to fulfill their roles and duties.

Offered by ACU’s Graduate School of Theology, students will be taught by an array of biblical scholars and professors focused on meeting the needs of their churches to further maximize the gospel and ministerial effectiveness. Upon completion, students will also be able to expand their knowledge of church ministry by stacking their certificate toward a graduate degree in Master of Arts in Christian Ministry or Master of Divinity.

“We understand the dilemmas churches are facing across our country, including the lack of theologically educated ministers,” said Dr. Carson Reed, Dean of ACU’s Graduate School of Theology. “Alongside our fellow professors within the Graduate School of Theology, we intend to develop cohorts of new ministers interested in expanding their biblical understanding to serve and lead their respective ministries well.”

The Certificate in Practical Ministry program will lead students through a set of core curriculum courses in foundational theology, scriptural teachings, contemporary culture and spiritual formation. With six distinct concentrations in youth and family, children’s, worship, preaching, spiritual formation and church leadership, this certificate aims to propel each student toward greater competence and professional development as ministers and servants within the church body.

The program is now accepting applications for the first course beginning January 13, 2025. Interested students will have the option of taking the course online or in person at our campus in Abilene, Texas. With hopes of attracting a variety of church leaders and ministers, the program is expected to grow and reach the needs of churches locally and nationally.
