Beyond the Classroom: 5 ways ACU Prepares You for an Exciting Career

Learning isn’t just about sitting in a classroom. At ACU, we believe some of the most important lessons happen when you’re out doing things, whether in your own community or around the world.

We call it experiential learning, and it’s a big part of what you’ll get in your education here. These experiences help you see the world in a new way while preparing you for life after graduation.

Check out some of the awesome things you can do:

1. Study Abroad

Imagine going to school not just in one place, but all over the world! ACU makes it happen.

We have semester-long and summer programs in Europe and Latin America, where you can live in a restored 19th-century villa in Germany, develop your Spanish language skills in Uruguay, or walk the historic streets of Oxford, England.

Or you can join professors for shorter Study Abroad trips to places like Costa Rica, China, India, Uganda, Nashville or Washington, D.C.

You’ll observe different customs and ways of life, explore nature and architecture, experience delicious new foods, and get a glimpse into new ways of thinking.

Learn to become a global citizen while having the adventure of your life!

2. Missions and Global Service

Ever thought about helping others in different parts of the world?

Our Halbert Center for Missions and Global Service sets you up for mission trips that last from a few days to two years. You can do things like medical missions or other projects during breaks.

Our engineering students designed latrines for a village in Honduras, while our nursing students taught hygiene classes to residents there. Students in our communication sciences and disorders program provided speech therapy for children in Uganda through the nonprofit Hope Speaks. And those are just a few examples.

If you’re interested in getting a head start on your future career, our WorldWide Witness program has summer opportunities worldwide.

And if you want to do missions for a longer time after finishing your degree, our Global Apprenticeship Program (GAP year) can make it happen.

3. Undergraduate research

You don’t have to be a science major to be a scientist. Our professors help students like you do real research no matter what you’re studying.

You might work in our cool Nuclear Energy eXperimental Testing (NEXT) Lab or team up with professionals at famous places like FermiLab and Brookhaven. You might learn about history by studying ancient native American rock paintings, or conduct research into whether social media is addictive. Or you might create your very own exhibit for a museum.

Students like you often share their findings at major conferences and get published in journals.

4. Internships

Get ready to take what you’ve learned in class and use it in the real world. ACU makes sure you do professional internships, and we’ve got connections all over the world. Imagine interning at Google, Walt Disney World, Citibank or even with the Texas Rangers!

This past summer, our students had amazing experiences interning for:

  • The Chosen, an award-winning TV series based on the life of Jesus;
  • Lands’ End as a graphic designer;
  • International Rescue Committee helping victims of human trafficking, survivors of torture and other refugees adjust to the U.S.;
  • and even the Cherokee Nation, which allowed one of our students to gain information technology skills while connecting with his family heritage.

And that’s just a small sampling of the internships our students completed.

The ACU Career Center has a team dedicated to matching you up with the perfect internship for your future career. Be sure to check it out!

5. Center for Pre-Health Professions

If you’re interested in becoming a doctor, dentist or other healthcare professional, ACU has something special for you. Our new Center for Pre-Health Professions prepares you for professional schools with one of the highest acceptance rates in the nation.

Outside the classroom, you can experience the day in the life of a neurosurgeon or assist a pediatric dentist with our shadowing program.

You’ll also have the chance to go on medical mission trips to change lives around the world.

And much more …

These are just a few of the hands-on learning opportunities waiting for you when you step foot on campus. At ACU, learning isn’t just about books and classrooms. It’s about going out there and doing amazing things!
