ACU receives accreditation for online Master of Marriage and Family Therapy program

COAMFTE

Abilene Christian University has received accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education for its online Master of Marriage and Family Therapy degree program. The M.M.F.T. degree is offered through ACU Online and is designed for graduate students who want the convenience and flexibility of an online program.

The COAMFTE accreditation indicates ACU’s online program meets or exceeds the established standards and criteria for MFT programs. It also means faculty actively contribute to the body of knowledge in their field.

“Accreditation from COAMFTE is the gold standard for marriage and family therapy degree programs. This accreditation recognizes the exceptional quality of our program and offers substantial benefits to our students to achieve their career and educational goals,” said Dr. Stephen Johnson, chief administrative officer for ACU Online.

Students receive practical training in couple, family and child therapy, mental illness, substance abuse and addiction, and assessment and diagnosis, coupled with real-world internship experience. They can follow one of five specialization tracks: Child and Adolescent Therapy, General, Medical Family Therapy, Therapy with Military Families, and Treatment of Trauma.

Graduates from the program are prepared for Christian service and leadership in various secular and faith-based clinical, medical or counseling settings. The MFT program will prepare them for licensure as a marriage and family therapist and for state and national exams.

“This makes ACU one of only nine online master’s programs in the country to receive this accreditation,” said Dr. Sara Blakeslee Salkil, program director of the online M.M.F.T. program. “By aligning with COAMFTE’s rigorous academic standards, our students will be better prepared to serve diverse families with increasingly complex problems in their communities.”
