ACU to celebrate Black History Month with speakers, activities

During the month of February, Abilene Christian University has planned guest speakers, a silent disco, special Chapel speakers, discussion groups and a variety of other student activities in honor of Black History Month. Several ACU groups collaborated to plan and host the events, including the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; the Office of Multicultural Affairs; the Black Student Union; the Adams Center; the Student Government Association; and the Campus Activities Board.

Events

  • Feb. 3 – Black History Month Silent Disco
    Hunter Welcome Center • 6-9 p.m.
  • Feb. 7 – African American Soul Food
    World Famous Bean • 11:30 a.m.
  • Feb. 8 – Welcome to the Table: Empowering Conversations on the Black Experience, hosted by the Office of Multicultural Affairs
    Chapel on the Hill • 6:30-8:30 p.m.
  • Feb. 17 – Replug Black Business Fair and Movie Night, hosted by the Student Government Association and Black Student Union
    Hart Auditorium • 6:30-8:30 p.m.
  • Feb. 21 – Significant Black Influences in Our Lives, hosted by the Adams Center for Teaching Excellence
    Reading Commons in the Brown Library • 11:30 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. 
  • Feb. 22 – Faith, Race and AC-YOU Discussion Panel, hosted by the Student Government Association
    Boone Family Theatre • 5:30 p.m.
  • Feb. 24 – AFRAM Festival, hosted by the Black Student Union, featuring  food, games and performances.
    Hunter Welcome Center • 5-8 p.m.
  • Feb. 28 – Late Night Breakfast, hosted by the Black Student Union and Campus Activities Board
    World Famous Bean • 9-11 p.m.

Chapels

  • Feb. 6 – Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Chapel Speaker Series: Cle Montgomery. Montgomery, a 1978 graduate of ACU, played six seasons in the NFL for the Los Angeles Raiders, Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals.

  • Feb. 9 – Black Student Union Chapel: Professional Development
    Hart Auditorium • 11 a.m.
  • Feb. 13 – Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Chapel Speaker Series: Tryce Prince. Prince, a 2018 graduate of ACU, is a research consultant for ACU’s Carl Spain Center on Race Studies & Spiritual Action and a Ph.D. student in sociology at the University of Illinois-Chicago.

  • Feb. 27 – Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Chapel Speaker Series: Bobby Griffin. Griffin, a 1990 graduate of ACU, is the chief diversity, equity and inclusion officer at Rockwell Automation and has more than 25 years of experience in diversity and inclusion strategy at Fortune 500 companies.
