ENGL 140 Artists and Authors of the Modern World (1 hour credit)

This course focuses on the basics and fundamentals of modernism. Students will read essential modernist texts and view famous works of modern art at world class museums. The first portion of the class learns about and encounters modern works of art; the second section gives students the chance to make connections between modernism and more contemporary works of art, such as films, shows, music, etc.

ENGL 140 Travel and Food Writing (1 hour credit)

The art of travel and food writing is an ability to translate your experiences and bring them alive for the reader. This course shows you how to observe and make mouths water as you inform, educate or persuade through the spectrum of travel/food writing. Creative brainstorming, hands-on writing exercises, group writing critiques and close analysis of readings by some of the best food writers comprise the main activities.

PLAW 140 Law, Justice and the Holocaust (1 hour credit)
Faculty: Chris Riley, JD
This course considers how systems of law and justice can be compromised to do evil and the ethical leadership required to prevent that from reoccurring. We’ll explore two famous trials and the historical sites that set the stage. The Reichstag Fire Trial centers on the arson of the German parliament, which Hilter leveraged to seize ultimate political power. The Nuremberg Trial was the Allied Powers’ attempts to seek justice for the atrocities of the Holocaust.

MGMT 140 Exploring Leadership (1 hour credit)
Faculty: Dr. Matt Deeg
Leadership is recognizing and awakening the potential in others to act. We’ll explore common leadership practices as well as how to lead when things are hard or no one wants to follow, all with an eye toward personal application and growth. Our time in nature provides room for conversation and reflection about 1) who you are as a leader and a follower and 2) how you can harness your strengths and build your weaknesses to positively impact others.

BIBM 140 GLIMPSE: God Lives in My Present Surroundings: Enchantment (1 hour credit)
Faculty: Beth Ann Fisher
This is a course containing an exploration of beauty through eight aspects: nature, simplicity, childlike curiosity, suffering and sacrifice, heavenly anticipation, God’s “yes” and “no,” creativity, and scriptural imagination. It is designed around scripture, communal discussion and daily discipleship challenges. The curriculum is designed to awaken awareness of God’s presence in the world, possibly in new ways, and measure personal growth in each of the eight focus areas.
