ACU Announces Launch of New Undergraduate Medical Billing Certificate

Certificate in Medical Billing graphicAbilene Christian University (ACU) is expanding its certificate program portfolio by launching a new undergraduate-level Certificate in Medical Billing. This fully online certificate program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and practical skills needed to support financial operations in healthcare settings.

Designed for individuals interested in entering a business-focused role in healthcare, the online certificate program equips students with foundational knowledge in medical terminology, billing and coding, insurance processes and reimbursement. The flexible online format allows students to develop career-ready skills while accommodating a variety of professional and personal commitments.

“At ACU, we are committed to creating educational pathways that respond to the changing needs of both students and the workforce,” said Dr. Stephen Johnson, chief executive officer of ACU Dallas. “The Certificate in Medical Billing provides students with an accessible pathway into healthcare while equipping them with practical skills they can use to serve healthcare organizations with excellence and integrity.”

Throughout the program, students will develop skills in patient information management, insurance processes, billing and reimbursement—key functions that support efficient healthcare operations across hospitals, clinics and other healthcare organizations. After completing the certificate, students will also be prepared to take the American Academy of Professional Coders’ Certified Professional Biller (CPB) exam. This industry credential will further demonstrate their expertise in medical billing practices.

“Medical billing professionals play an important role in helping healthcare organizations operate effectively while ensuring patients can navigate an increasingly complex healthcare system,” said Dr. George Saltsman, provost and vice president of academic affairs. “This certificate gives students the opportunity to develop specialized skills in a shorter timeframe while building a strong academic foundation they can continue to expand throughout their careers.”

The Certificate in Medical Billing also provides students with a pathway into ACU’s online Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Administration program. All 18 credit hours earned through the certificate can be applied towards the undergraduate degree, allowing students to build upon their education as their professional goals evolve. Graduates can pursue opportunities such as medical biller, medical billing specialist, medical office administrator and more.

ACU’s online certificate program is currently accepting applications for the inaugural cohort with classes starting in January 2027. For more information about the program, visit our website.
