Abilene Christian University has established the Center for Pre-Law Professions – led by executive director Chris Riley, J.D., associate professor of government and criminal justice – to unify and enhance its growing pre-law program.
The center will consolidate advising, recruiting, student programming, alumni engagement and professional preparation under a cohesive unit. This initiative reflects ACU’s commitment to student success, distinctive programming, interdisciplinary collaboration and enrollment growth.
“Over the past several years, ACU’s pre-law program has grown significantly,” Riley said. “That growth has been accompanied by the steady development of opportunities that now make pre-law one of ACU’s most distinctive professional pathways.”
Since launching a legal studies minor in 2021-22, ACU’s pre-law program has attracted 55 declared minors. The university now serves more than 160 students from various majors expressing interest in legal careers. Additionally, ACU has achieved three consecutive years of 100% law school placement, demonstrating the program’s strength.
“Establishing this center reflects ACU’s commitment to excellent professional preparation,” said Dr. Susan Lewis, provost. “Chris Riley has built a strong, student-centered pre-law program, and under his leadership, the center will strengthen ACU’s position as a destination for future legal professionals.”
The center will build upon existing initiatives, including:
- Pre-law breakout sessions during visit days and summer orientation.
- An annual Pre-Law Day in partnership with the Youth Justice Alliance, attracting over 100 high school students to campus.
- “All Rise,” a monthly peer support meeting for Pell-eligible and first-generation students.
- Weekly Pre-Law Society Chapel and student organization.
- Study Abroad and global service opportunities specific to pre-law students.
- Scholarship partnerships with SMU, Baylor and Pepperdine law schools.
- Law school admissions endowment and the newly formed Wildcat Bar Association, with more than 60 dues-paying members.
- Intercollegiate Moot Court team and course.
- LSAT prep courses.
- Externship program.
