Abilene Christian University 
(ACU) is creating more pathways into a speech-language pathology career through two new undergraduate certificate programs. The Speech-Language Pathology Certificate provides the prerequisite coursework for graduate-level study in speech-language pathology. The Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Certificate prepares students with the foundational knowledge and skills needed to pursue a career as a speech-language pathology assistant (SLPA).
Designed for individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree, the certificate programs provide flexible pathways for students interested in a career in speech pathology. Through focused online coursework, students will explore communication sciences and disorders while developing an understanding of speech, language, hearing and how people communicate.

The Speech-Language Pathology Certificate was created for students with an undergraduate degree in an unrelated field to take leveling courses and prepare to enter a graduate speech-language pathology (SLP) program. Students will gain foundational knowledge in communication science and disorders and complete the prerequisite courses to continue their education. Along the way, students will also develop expertise in audiology and AAC methods to serve children and adults.
The Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Certificate program provides students with focused study and hands-on experience needed to support SLPs and treat patients. After completing the certificate program, students can pursue opportunities as an SLPA and begin making an impact in families and communities.
“Communication plays an essential role in how people learn, build relationships and engage with the world around them,” said Dr. George Saltsman, provost and vice president of academic affairs. “By offering two distinct pathways, we can meet students at different points in their educational journeys and equip them with the knowledge and experiences needed for graduate study or to begin serving individuals.”
ACU’s online Speech-Language Pathology and Speech-Language Pathology Assistant programs are currently accepting applications for upcoming cohorts, with classes beginning in January 2027. For more information about the programs, visit ACU’s website.
