Celebrations, education, entertainment scheduled for Hispanic Heritage Month

 

Entra a la Plaza 2021

Students, faculty, staff and the Abilene community will celebrate Hispanic Heritage month with a wide variety of events planned at Abilene Christian University.

  • Artardecer, Friday, Sept. 16, 7:30 p.m. – a sunset devotional with conchas provided at the Faubus Fountain Lake. Sponsored by ACU’s Hispanos Unidos. Open to ACU faculty, staff and students.
  • Chapel Presentation, Sept. 19, 11 a.m.– Abel Alvarez, advancement and university relations officer for diverse initiatives, will speak in Chapel at Moody Coliseum. Open to the public.
  • Action Committee for Hispanic Initiatives Presentation, Sept. 19, 11:30 a.m. – Abel Alvarez, advancement and university relations officer for diverse initiatives, will speak in the Adams Center to ACU faculty about understanding Hispanic Serving Institutions.
  • Loteria Game Night, Sept. 22, 6:30 p.m.  – Game night sponsored by Hispanos Unidos in the Onstead Packer Biblical Studies Building, Room 129. Open to ACU faculty, staff and students.
  • Entra a la Plaza, Sept. 30, 6 p.m. – Performances by Baile Folklorico and 83 Entertainment, as well as food trucks, a raffle and kids’ activities (face painting, petting zoo and more) at the GATA Fountain in the mall area of ACU’s campus. Sponsored by ACU’s Hispanos Unidos. Open to the public.

    The Crossing, Oct. 2, 9 p.m. – A night of bilingual praise and worship at University Church of Christ. Open to the community.

  • Bidi Bidi Banda, Oct. 7, 8 p.m. – An all-star Selena tribute at the Rich Welcome Center Plaza and Labyrinth, outside the Hunter Welcome Center. Dad’s Ice Cream and Bahama Bucks will be on hand for refreshments. Sponsored by ACU’s Hispanos Unidos; Office of Multicultural Affairs; and Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Open to the public.
  • Worship, Oct. 9, 10 a.m. – A Sunday morning bilingual praise and worship service with meal provided afterward at University Church of Christ. Open to the community.
  • Untold Stories Panel and Book Review, Oct. 10, 11:30 a.m. – A faculty discussion in the Adams Center of Untold Stories: The Latinx Leadership Experience in Higher Education by Peter Rios.
  • Movie Night, Oct. 12, 6:30 p.m. – Movie sponsored by Hispanos Unidos. Open to ACU faculty, staff and students. Location to be determined.
  • Summit: Hispanic Ministry, Oct. 13, 14 – As part of ACU’s Summit gathering, Hispanic and Latino ministers will come together to reflect on what Jesus has to say about abiding in his word from a Latino perspective. Open to the community but Summit registration required; see acusummit.org for more information.
