This is your opportunity to learn about the issues that impact global communications from an international perspective during an in-depth week-long course. 

Trip highlights include:

  • Blenheim Palace
  • Tate Modern Museum

  • Attend a theatre production in London’s West End

When: July 10-16, 2022

Cost: $1,500 per student – includes course fees, airfare, lodging, meals and excursions. Students are responsible for textbooks, snacks and souvenirs. Limited scholarships are available based on your application package.

  • February 1 – Application deadline
  • March 1 – Acceptance notifications released
  • April 3 – Student contract and $500 nonrefundable program deposit due 
  • April 10 – Waitlisted students notified if space is available
  • June 1 – Copy of passport and COVID-19 proof of vaccination due
  • June 15 – Remaining nonrefundable program fee due
  • July 10 – Depart DFW International Airport for London

Information about Summer Scholars

 

The program has places for 16-30 high school students from across the United States.

 

Summer Scholars is led by Dr. Tamara Long, vice president for enrollment management and Dr. Susan Lewis, vice provost and professor of journalism and mass communication. Garrett Sublette, director of enrollment operations, Rachel Goodman, senior director of enrollment, and Dr. Todd Womble, assistant professor of English, also accompany the students. Additional ACU faculty and staff will be in England for the Oxford campus grand opening.

July 10-16, 2022

Students receive one hour of college credit for JMC 140 Special Topics: Issues in Global Communication.

The total program cost to attend is $1,500 per student, covering course fees, airfare, lodging, meals and excursions. Students are responsible for additional costs covering textbooks, snacks and souvenirs. Limited scholarships are available.

Per ACU Study Abroad policy, all students traveling internationally are required to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination.

Students need a laptop or Chromebook to complete assignments. Students can bring a personal laptop or borrow an ACU-issued Chromebook during the trip.

The Process

Application Requirements

  • Submit the online application, including two personal statements.
  • Students must be a current high school sophomore or junior.
  • Submit a letter of recommendation completed by a current high school teacher or administrator.
  • The application and recommendation letter must be submitted by Feb. 1, 2022, to be considered. Due to demand, we cannot accept late applications.

Students will be notified on March 1, 2022, if they are accepted into Summer Scholars.

Travel Details

Yes, a valid U.S. passport is required. If you already have a passport, it must be valid through December 2022.

If you do not have a current U.S. passport, we recommend you begin your passport application as soon as possible. To apply, download the application form from travel.state.gov. You must create an appointment to submit your application in person at a local post office, county courthouse or some public libraries. There are items (ID, birth certificate, photo, etc.) you must bring with you, or it will be sent back for you to do again. It can take up to six months to receive your passport. ACU needs a copy of it by June 1.

Summer Scholars are required to attend virtual meetings with ACU to onboard prior to travel. Additionally, students have required common reading assigned before the trip.

ACU Summer Scholars, faculty and staff will stay in world-class hotels in London and Oxford, England. Each student will be assigned a room with one roommate. Parents will be informed of all accommodation details prior to Summer Scholars’ departure.

Students can check one suitcase and bring one carry-on item and a personal item.

ACU faculty and staff will be with the Summer Scholars student group throughout the entire trip. We will travel as a group to each location and stay in the same hotels. Supervised free time will be allowed for shopping and exploring historical sites and museums.

We have provided a tentative agenda for Summer Scholars. Events and times are subject to change. A finalized agenda will be available soon.

ACU faculty and staff will be with the Summer Scholars student group throughout the entire trip. We will travel as a group to each location and stay in the same hotels. Supervised free time will be allowed for shopping and exploring historical sites and museums.

Parents and families are not permitted to travel with the ACU group. However, families can travel concurrently with a summer scholar booking a different return flight to extend their stay with family.

We will fly as a group from DFW International Airport to London Heathrow Airport on July 10. If you live out of state, we will fly you to DFW the morning of July 10 to join the group.
