Formed in 1956, the Conference on Christianity and Literature is dedicated to scholarly excellence and collegial exchange and is composed of several hundred members from over a dozen countries and a variety of academic institutions and religious traditions. CCL president and event organizer Dr. Darryl Tippens serves as senior advisor for academic initiatives for Abilene Christian University and is the University Distinguished Scholar of Faith, Learning and Literature.
The conference will feature keynote speaker Dr. Wilfred M. McClay, award-winning author of The Masterless: Self and Society in Modern America and co-editor of Why Place Matters: Geography, Identity and Public Life in Modern America. McClay, who is the G.T. and Libby Blankenship chair of history and director of the Center for the History of Liberty at the University of Oklahoma, will deliver an address titled “Gardeners and Pilgrims: The Dual Aspect of Place in the Christian Imagination” at 6 p.m. Oct. 6.
The conference also will feature Abilene Christian’s Dr. Steve Weathers, Dr. Jeanine Varner and Julie Johnson, representing the university’s Department of Language and Literature. Registration for the conference ends Monday, Oct. 2, and is $65 for students and $100 for regular attendees.
