Ice storm cancels school, but not student fun

Ice Hockey blogThe winter storm that rolled through West Texas Thursday night and into today left bitter cold and about a half-inch of ice and sleet. That was enough to cancel classes and close the Abilene Christian University campus, but where some saw a good reason to stay inside, a few innovative ACU students saw perfect conditions for a pickup hockey game.

There was no Zamboni in sight, but the parking lot between Brown Library, Mabee Hall and Barrett Hall was one big silky smooth sheet of ice, a perfect – although rare – reason to break out the sticks, pucks and nets. Local school kids were ice skating on neighborhood streets, but ACU students stuck to casual shoes and boots for this game. Some participants today were members of the university’s roller hockey club team, which competes in the Southwest Collegiate Hockey League.
The World Famous Bean served three meals today to students, even though the rest of the campus was closed. The frigid weather is forecasted to continue through Saturday before things begin to thaw Sunday. Thanks to junior Noah Kitts for the use of this photo.
