1959 Homecoming Queen Shryl Grisham and Coming Home Queen Joye Deavenport
The Coming Home Queen from the class of 1949, Joye Belle (Deavenport ’50) Kelly (seen here on the right) planned to fly by private plane from her home in Muskogee, Okla., for festivities at Abilene Christian University’s Homecoming in 1959. However, bad weather delayed her arrival until after the traditional Friday night Bonfire – a big enough deal then to have made headlines in the Abilene Reporter-News in its Saturday morning edition – but she made it in time to attend the game the next afternoon in Shotwell Stadium.
Pictured at left is the 1959 Queen, Shryl (Grisham ’60) Allen, who hails from Blanco and still lives there today. She majored in speech therapy and was treasurer of the “W” Club, and was a member of Kappa Delta Pi and the Kitten Klub.
