ACU alum Alex Guiton became a speech therapist because she wanted to make a difference. And she must be doing something right. She was recently awarded Therapist of the Year for Kid's Care Therapy, a Texas-based company that offers pediatric home health care services to children with special needs in Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, Central Texas and the outlying metro areas.

A passion for helping others

"I have always had a passion for helping others and wanted to make a difference," says Alex, who earned both her undergraduate and graduate degrees from ACU. "I did not want to pursue the doctor route but wanted to be a part of the medical community."

As a speech pathologist, she works with children on a daily basis. "It is a blessing working with them, because I really feel like I am making a difference. I love my job and embrace the challenges that come along with it."

Alex's decision to become a speech therapist was made early in her academic career.

"When I was in high school, I had the opportunity to shadow a speech pathologist and fell in love with it. She was working with adults at the time, but she explained the versatility and flexibility that this occupation provides," Alex says.  "After graduation, I actually thought that I would be working with adults, but God had other plans in mind for me. I never thought I would be working with children, yet alone in a home health setting."

Alex advises students pursuing a career in speech therapy to keep an open mind. "There are many opportunities available. Do not limit yourself to one area or group of people because you never know where you will end up."
