Jesse Olvera ('08) | Online Graduate Student
Teacher/coach for Abilene Christian Schools
B.A. from ACU in exercise and sports science with teacher certification
When he isn't on the field coaching for Abilene Christian Schools or in the classroom teaching, Jesse Olvera ('08) is at his computer earning his master's degree through ACU's online education program.
I needed a program that fit my life. I am very busy with teaching and coaching throughout the whole school year and the online option was the only route for me.
Jesse certainly wears many hats at ACS. In addition to his teaching duties, he currently serves as the head boys middle school basketball coach, head middle school football coach, defensive varsity football coach and head varsity baseball coach. In 2011, Jesse helped coach the varsity football team to the TAPPS 6-Man Division I football championship.
Online program offers flexibility
"I needed a program that fit my life. I am very busy with teaching and coaching throughout the whole school year and the online option was the only route for me," Jesse says.
In order to maintain success on the field and in his studies, Jesse needed a master's program that was flexible and simple. ACU proved to be a perfect fit. In fact, Jesse says if the online program was not an option, he would likely not be able to pursue his master's degree.
"I have been really pleased how simple ACU has made the program. The modules are very organized, instructions are clear and the videos really help," he says. "There is also always someone you can get a hold of if you need help. The material being taught is very challenging but it is explained very well and in great formats."
Jesse believes participation in the online program has taught him valuable skills in motivation, mediation and negotiation - undoubtedly skills pertinent to being a successful coach.
"An online program is unique because you get to learn at your own pace. Although there are deadlines, I felt I could pace myself. I never felt rushed or hurried," Jesse says.
