Last year, Abilene Christian University introduced a program that had all freshmen campus-wide using iPhone applications on a daily basis. Now, ACU students are designing their own applications.
As part of a Maymester class called Mobile Computing: iPhone Development Class, five students from the School of Information Technology have the opportunity to design their own iPhone applications for private use. The students will spend time learning to develop applications generally for all mobile technology, and specifically for the Apple iPhone and iPod touch.
"Students have to come into this class already knowing how to program," said Dr. Brian Burton, assistant professor of computer science at ACU. "We are focusing on the specific theory and skills needed to program in a mobile environment. Developing for mobile technology has very specific challenges given the small viewing size and low processing power."
As of now, the students are only designing for in-house use under a university license, but several students have expressed interest in purchasing developers' licenses so that they can submit their applications to the Apple Apps store and sell their designs.
