The Abilene Christian University Police Department, in partnership with the Abilene Police Department, will conduct a joint training evaluation on the ACU campus at Smith-Adams Residence Hall complex located at 1400 Cedar Crest, May 20. The exercise will begin at 2 p.m. and run through approximately 11 p.m. This will test university police and local emergency response to a simulated campus shooting with casualties.
"Training is always crucial, and joint training with all local responders ensures seamless response during a real crisis event," said Chief Jimmy Ellison, ACU Police.
Several local law enforcement and emergency response agencies will participate in this year's drill. These agencies include ACUPD, Abilene Police Department, Taylor County Sheriff's Department, Abilene City Marshals, Texas Department of Public Safety and Abilene Fire Department.
"The full day of training scenarios will test multiple agency responses to a campus based shooting," said Ellison. "Every agency trains on their own, but the reality is, in a school shooting there will be officers from various agencies arriving on the scene simultaneously, and learning to respond together is crucial. This year's training is designed to test the training tactics that all area agencies have learned over the last few years."
This is the second year ACU has hosted this drill on its campus.
