ACU recognizes disabilities during special week, April 13-17

Abilene Christian University will recognize Disability Awareness Week 2009, April 13-17, with activities designed to share and celebrate the unique gifts and abilities of students with disabilities in the ACU community.

"Abilene Christian University has a long-standing tradition of proactively supporting students with a wide variety of disabilities," said J. Scott Self, director of Alpha Scholars Program at ACU. "One of the fundamental blessings of our work in Alpha Scholars Program has been the opportunity to learn from the unique abilities of the disabled."

Monday through Wednesday, guest chapel speakers will be featured who are either successful graduates of the Alpha program or the parent of an Alpha graduate. Art created by Alpha art students will also be displayed throughout campus. The week will conclude on Friday with a wheelchair basketball tournament.

"We are focusing this week on the working title 'disABLEd: Find out who I am,'" said Self. "Students with disabilities are often some of the most resourceful, proactive, and creative students on campus. Their ability to find success is often based upon a belief system that they are enabled in different ways from their peers."
