ACU raises Autism awareness with educational workshops

In recognition of Autism Awareness Month, which takes place in the month of April, Abilene Christian University's Teacher Education Department will host two Autism education workshops.

"The Teacher Education Department has seen a great need for training in research-based strategies for individuals with Autism and we feel that this will be a great beginning," said Dennis Cavitt, an instructor in Special Education in the Teacher Education Department.

The first of these two workshops will be held April 16, 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. in the Highland Church of Christ auditorium, and will be open to the public. There are no fees or registration requirements.

"We are expecting a large turnout for this workshop," said Cavitt. "Already, I have had requests from people from Amarillo to San Antonio."

The second of the workshops will be a two-day event open by invitation only and will include teachers from Big Country schools, ACU students and faculty, parents of children with Autism and school psychologists.

Both workshops will feature Dr. Gary Mesibov, director of Division TEACCH, the center for Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication-handicapped Children in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
