New Bible commentary, The Transforming Word, now available through ACU Press

Mark HamiltonACU Press has released The Transforming Word, a Bible commentary edited by Abilene Christian University faculty. The Transforming Word is now available for purchase at the ACU Press offices and bookstores throughout the country.

Although ACU faculty members have contributed to and edited multi-volume commentaries, this is the first one-volume commentary edited by Abilene Christian University faculty.

"It is gratifying to be part of a team of people helping others learn from Scripture and the vision of a redeemed humanity that it contains," said  Dr. Mark Hamilton, general editor of The Transforming Word and associate professor of Old Testament in the ACU Graduate School of Theology.  "I hope that The Transforming Word will aid readers in understanding the Bible's ways of calling human beings to meaningful lives. The stories, songs, prophecies, and wise sayings of Scripture point us beyond themselves to the God who made us.  We hope that our commentary will illuminate the ancient text better so that we can see the eternal realities more clearly."

Each book in the commentary includes a general introduction, and a bibliography in the back of the book allows readers to find details on specific topics.

"I hope readers will use this volume for their personal studies and for the many ways Christians teach. I hope it will help all of us read scripture with understanding, feeling and commitment," Hamilton said.

The publication took more than seven years and 53 contributors to complete, and of the 53 contributors and editors about 24 are affiliated with ACU. The ACU editors include: Dr. John Willis ('55), Burton Cofffman Chair for Biblical Studies and professor of Old Testament; Dr. Ken Cukrowski ('84), associate dean of the College of Biblical Studies and associate professor of New Testament; Dr. Nancy Shankle, professor and chair of the Department of English; and Dr. James Thompson ('64), Professor of New Testament and Onstead Chair for Biblical Studies. More than 30 contributors from various branches of the Stone-Campbell movement were selected, all of whom hold or are pursuing a doctoral degree in biblical studies.
