ACU future journalists earn honors at state and regional competitions
Twenty-five journalism students from Abilene Christian University recently received high honors at the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association's (TIPA) annual convention and the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) regional contest.

The journalism and mass communicaton students who participated in the TIPA annual convention in College Station, won a combined 42 awards, including 11 live competition awards. The categories in which students won awards included yearbook, radio, newspaper and live competition.

"We always do well in these competitions, but I was especially pleased with the showing by the students who work at KACU-FM and those who participated in the live competitions at TIPA," said Kenenth Pybus, assistant professor of journalism and mass communication. "I'm also proud of the four showings at SPJ and the three first places. That's almost unheard of. This just underscores the quality of students who are attracted to ACU and to our mass communication program."

At the SPJ Region 8 awards in New Orleans, ACU students took home several first place prizes. Jared Fields, a senior from Paducah, Texas, won first place in feature writing. Daniel Johnson, a junior from Abilene, won first place in the sports writing competition, and senior Brian Schmidt from Austin, won first place in the breaking news photography competition and second in sports photography.

These students competed against the top student media in the region, and their first place entries will be entered in the National Society of Professional Journalists competition.

ACU students competed against more than 500 students from the top universities in the state, including University of Texas at Austin, Baylor University, University of Texas at Arlington, University of North Texas and Southern Methodist University.
