On February 14, the ACU-Cockerell Gallery will present a faculty exhibit featuring the works of Robert Green and Kenny Jones, both professors in the ACU Department of Art and Design, and Polly Jones, a professional artist. The exhibit is entitled "Palimpsest," a word which refers to layered work. The exhibit will open in conjunction with the monthly downtown Artwalk, and will show Feb. 14-March 7 in the ACU-Cockerell Art Gallery at 1133 N. Second St.
On Sunday, Feb. 17 at 2 p.m., the artists will be discussing their work in the gallery. This is the first of several lectures in ACU's new "Sunday Lecture Series." The lectures are scheduled each month for the Sunday following Thursdays' ArtWalk. All lectures will begin at 2 p.m. in the ACU-Cockerell Art Gallery, and will be free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
"Palimpsest, from the Greek palimpsestos
meaning 'scraped again,' refers to parchment that has been scraped
down and reused for inscription of another manuscript," said Robert Green, professor of art and design at ACU. "Typically, the parchment
is turned 90 degrees so that the new text runs across the former. With
time, the original text reappears, leaving two layers of visible writing."
Upcoming lecture series include a lecture March 17 by Jack Maxwell, chair of the department of art and design at ACU. He will discuss the art and design program at ACU in conjunction with the March exhibit "A Cameo: Selected Student Works from the Department of Art and Design at ACU." On April 13, Nil Santana, professor of art at ACU, will speak about his show entitled "Recent Works: Nil Santana, Photography and Digital Media."
"The new ACU-Cockerell Gallery has been a great avenue for allowing the
community to see how much talent we have in the ACU department of art
and design," said Garlan Jenkens, director of the Shore Art Gallery and
the ACU-Cockerell Art Gallery.
