On Sept. 3, the new ACU Psychology Clinic at Abilene Christian University began offering affordable counseling to the Abilene and ACU communities. The clinic, located in Chambers Hall on the ACU campus, offers psychological assessments and diagnoses, as well as general counseling.
The clinic is a response to ACU's growing psychology program and a commitment to achieve excellence in the training of masters-level practitioners in the mental health field, said Cherisse Flanagan, director of the clinic. ACU graduate students in the Clinical/Counseling and School Psychology Master's programs can work in the Psychology Clinic as part of their clinical training.
Student training involves one-on-one coaching of the trainee by ACU faculty, as well as videotaped supervision of counseling sessions.
"Consistent with ACU's mission, the department is also committed to reaching out to those in need in the Abilene and surrounding area," said Flanagan. "We offer both personal counseling and psychological evaluation for adults and children at reduced rates. We hope we are able to reach out to people who might not otherwise be able to afford counseling or assessment."
The clinic offers psychological assessment and diagnosis on ADD/ADHD, learning disabilities, behavioral difficulties, depression, anxiety, personality disorders and bipolar disorders. They also offer counseling on depression, anxiety, grief, relationship issues, abuse, child-abuse, family origin problems, low self-esteem, pain management and career counseling.
