Whether you’re looking to hone your creative writing craft, examine classic and contemporary works, or develop your research, analytical and presentation skills, ACU’s Master of Arts in English can take your language and literature proficiency to the next level.

We’re one of a few M.A. in English programs that incorporates faith into the curriculum, and we offer one-on-one mentorship, small class sizes and a diverse faculty of Christian scholars. Specialize in one of three areas:

  • Creative writing: Graduate with a completed short story collection, poetry chapbook, novella or memoir.
  • Composition and rhetoric: Prepare to teach composition with advanced training in current pedagogical rhetoric theory.
  • Literature: Explore the critical and theoretical approaches to texts written in various literary periods by writers from across the spectrum.

Admission Requirements

  • Complete an online application
  • Pay the $50 application fee; 
  • An official transcript(s) in English (or translated to English) of all previous colleges attended:
    • The transcript must indicate an earned bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university or equivalent.
    • The transcript should reflect a competence in a second language (usually demonstrated through the completion of sophomore-level foreign language).
    • The transcript should reflect 12 hours of upper-division English courses.
    • The transcript should reflect a cumulative undergraduate approximate B average or above in the area of focus or related area and evidence of an overall productive GPA. 
  • Two letters of recommendation (may be submitted through the online application); 
  • An official GRE score; 
  • A two-page, double-spaced purpose statement addressing why you want to pursue graduate school, why you chose ACU, and your future career goals;  
  • A writing sample* in either: 
    • A sample critical essay (maximum of 15 pages) that demonstrates the applicant’s capacity for interpretation and literary analysis, or
    • A sample of creative writing in prose or poetry (maximum of 20 pages) if the student intends to pursue the creative writing track. 

*Writing samples will not be returned unless a self-addressed, stamped envelope is provided.
